“A K-9 team provides the best “bang for the buck” when it comes to detecting explosives, drugs and cell phones. A well trained and maintained team will give a facility a mobile unit that can search interior and exterior areas of the facility to include vehicles and packages. There are fixed entry units that can be purchased where dogs can provide a fixed searching capability for entrances.”

“Staying fit is a challenge for most people (see Tom Gibney's blog), but for corrections staff not being in shape could be fatal. It’s not like they show in the movies where you have a fight
between inmates or between inmates and staff every few minutes, but these incidents do occur. When a correctional officer needs to respond to a physical challenge being in shape could make the difference between life and death. I don’t mean to be over dramatic but it is a serious issue. Departments need to do everything they can to encourage, and in some cases reward; staff for staying fit. I think imposing minimum physical performance standards for being hired and to maintain employment are necessary.”

“Lindsay Lohan’s incarceration is in the news and a lot of emphasis is put on the point that her sentence will be reduced due to overcrowding. This brings up a question, why would a judge impose a sentence on a person that the judge knows will
be reduced due to overcrowding? Of course the answer is that if the individual, in this case Lindsey Lohan, doesn’t follow the rules while incarcerated her sentence would not be reduced. Also, in many jurisdictions if the individual violates their conditions of release they can be returned to jail to serve the remainder of the sentence.
I understand why a jail would reduce sentences for good behavior; we did it in my facility due to overcrowding. The concern I have is that it isn’t a good answer to overcrowding. If overcrowding is due to an increase in population then there is a need to build to meet that increased need. In the case of Los Angeles they have a new facility sitting empty because they don’t have the funding to hire staff to run the facility. Lindsay Lohan does need treatment, but treatment only works when the addict is ready to admit they have a problem they can’t handle. I don’t know if she has reached that point yet. Many addicts die before they get to that point.”

“Video visitation is becoming more and more prevalent in corrections and with budget shortfalls is it always a budget saver? Any time you don’t have to move inmates I believe you save money. Also if you can reduce the amount of contraband coming in to your jail it saves money. So the short answer is, “Yes”.
To get the most out of a video visitation system it needs to have a scheduling capability and your jail management system needs to be interfaced with the scheduling module in your video visitation system.”

“Why do we human beings resist change? I like routines and things I’m familiar with, but I do like change and the challenge of learning and doing new things. Corrections needs change, and it is in continual change with the influence and control of the courts. I would recommend that if you choose a career in corrections you need to be willing accept and embrace change on a regular basis.”

“I remember taking my kids to my sister’s wedding reception and
seated at one table was several of my aunts and uncles. I explained to my daughter that they were her great aunts and uncles, so she immediately blurted out to them that this must be the “great table”. They all had a good laugh on that remark.”

“I do miss my parents everyday and think of the great childhood that they gave me. I hope that I was half the parent to my three
kids that my parents were to me. Being a good parent is the most important role we can perform in life. Raising your child to be a product member of society is a great accomplishment. God Bless all parents.”

“I would like to shoot the person that invented the middle seat
on an airplane. What is the polite thing to do with your arms when you’re in a middle seat? Which armrest to do you take? I kind of just keep my elbows in and don’t take either but it is excruciating. I just Googled that question and one of the results said that they’re both yours if your sitting in the middle. I like that idea! Here’s the link: www.fsisolutions.com/.../Middle%20Seat%20Survival%20Guide%20-%20Web%20PDF.pdf
It’s worse than being the inmate on third inmate in a cell built for two and having to sleep in the boat on the floor. If you haven’t been arrested or worked in corrections, the boat is a foam bed they throw on the floor when the jail or prison is overcrowded.”

“TSA at Sea-Tac International Airport in Seattle, Washington have restored a little of my faith in humanity. They were cheerful, pleasant, quick and efficient at the security check-in and
demonstrated outstanding common sense. Since this is “Hammock Day” I do have to say that I have never found a hammock to be comfortable. I think if I was a jail administrator again, I would install hammocks for all of the inmates to sleep in.”
